Spark for embers

Inspiration and engagement for increased restoration and management of river meadows

About the project

The Spark for embers project ran from 2016 to 2019. To restore the open landscape, we wanted to inspire and motivate entrepreneurs in the region to start managing the river meadows. The most important factor for creating sustainable development with river meadows that are continuously managed is to find the local forces in the community.

The main purpose and goal of the project has therefore been to create inspiration and engagement among local entrepreneurs who, with the right conditions, can drive the restoration and management of river meadows on their own. By putting the entrepreneur at the center and with a clear network focus, we wanted to create good opportunities for this. We also wanted to facilitate contacts between entrepreneurs and advisory bodies such as the municipality and county administrative board, as well as with landowners.

Purpose is to contribute to increased management of river meadows and other side meadows, thereby creating new and preserved jobs, a more attractive countryside, greater biological diversity, and improved conditions for tourism. The project aims to contribute to this by inspiring and engaging local actors to restore and manage river meadows on their own, facilitating contacts between entrepreneurs/farmers, landowners, and advisory bodies, providing opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and experiences, laying a foundation for future restoration efforts, and for future national and international collaborations, as well as contributing to further strengthening the brand Biosphere Area River Landscape Lower Dalälven.

CASE is to have contributed to increased engagement and collaborations by the end of the project period to enhance management in the area and to increased knowledge about regulations, support, forms of collaboration, and the benefits of management. Other goals include laying a foundation for future restoration efforts and for future national and international collaborations.

Activities in the project consists of inspiring and engaging local farmers and entrepreneurs, e.g., through networking, study visits, support, and coaching. Facilitate contacts between entrepreneurs/farmers and authorities such as the municipality and county administrative board with expertise in business consulting and agricultural consulting. Identify and initiate collaboration with municipal business units.
Create contacts and bring together landowners, livestock keepers, and entrepreneurs. Together with the county administrative boards, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, landowners, and other actors, lay a foundation for future restoration efforts, including by developing proposals for site selection, implementation of restoration, preparations for subsequent management, organization, and monitoring of effects on biological diversity, mosquito occurrence, etc. Lay a foundation for future national and international cooperation through environmental analysis, partner search, and initial contacts.

Spark for embers

The area of meadow and pasture land in management or under restoration increased by 6 percent (197 ha) during the project period. It is primarily the area of land under restoration that has increased, but also hay meadows and forest grazing. Unfortunately, the area of pasture land decreased slightly during the period. The total increase of 6 percent is encouraging, but how much of this change can be attributed to the project is impossible to estimate. Compared to 2015, that is, the year before the project started, the area of meadow and pasture land in management or under restoration increased by a full 11 percent.
